Project Description

ARM Architecture led a transformative $34 million revitalization of gallery and play spaces at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, marking the largest redevelopment since its 2001 opening. Central to this project is the striking red glass feature stair, which serves as both a visual and architectural centerpiece, enhancing the museum’s modern appeal while preserving its historical significance.

Design3, in collaboration with ABS Facades, provided a detailed shop drawing package for this intricate installation. We developed comprehensive glazing and framing fabrication documentation for the Reynaers glazing suite, which featured double-glazed glass. The glazing frame was fixed to a curved steel frame made of CHS steel sections via bespoke custom brackets, ensuring precise integration and structural integrity.

The red glass feature stair not only adds functionality but also acts as an artistic statement, shaping a new window and lakeside stair, and revitalizing the mezzanine area. This thoughtful integration enhances the museum’s spatial dynamics, creating a visually captivating journey for visitors and setting a new benchmark for museum architecture through its innovative design and cultural preservation.
